27 Jul MPM Brings Legal and Business Insights to Emerging Architects
The practice of architecture extends well beyond design. As firms grow and projects become more complex, architects are expected to navigate contracts, financial considerations, project risk, and client relationships with the same level of confidence they bring to the design process.
These topics were the focus of the July 10 session of the AIA Puerto Rico Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program (CKLDP), where MPM Managing Member Carolina Velaz Rivero served as keynote lecturer for the program’s “Rainmaking & Business Development” session.
Her presentation, Building Beyond Design: Law, Finance & Strategic Partnerships for Emerging Architects, examined many of the practical challenges architects encounter as they establish and expand their practices. The discussion addressed contracts, payment structures, insurance, risk management, project feasibility, financing, and the role bankruptcy and restructuring can play within the construction ecosystem.
Beyond the legal and financial framework, the presentation emphasized the importance of viewing business development as an extension of professional service. Strong technical skills remain essential, but long-term success also depends on building trust, communicating effectively with clients, and developing relationships across the design and construction industry.
The discussion also highlighted how emerging architects can position themselves as strategic partners while building meaningful networks and translating technical expertise into trusted client relationships. These skills strengthen project teams, improve collaboration, and help firms create lasting value for their clients.
Programs such as the Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program play an important role in preparing the next generation of industry leaders by providing opportunities to learn from experienced professionals across multiple disciplines. Bringing together perspectives from architecture, law, finance, and business helps participants develop a broader understanding of the challenges and opportunities they will encounter throughout their careers.
